| - I had driven past this place many times without realizing it was even there! I finally decided to check it out and so glad I did. It's a wonderful place, with so much to see! The Nevada State Museum is on the grounds, also, and your general admission gets you in there, too. I don't know why Springs Preserve isn't more well known to tourists and locals, but it should be. There's so few things for families to enjoy in Vegas, it really needs to be publicized more widely.
I went on a cool Spring day and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. It's a big place, so you probably won't be able to see it all in one visit. Everything is well kept, clean, with varying exhibits during the year. If you're a local, you get a discount on admission and apparently if you're Bank of America credit card holder, you can get in free on the first Saturday of every month using the BofA museum program. I didn't use that, so can't verify how it works or if it only gets you in free at the museum portion of the Preserve, but it's worth keeping that option in mind.
There's also a nice train ride around the perimeter of the park. Kids enjoy that, but adults will also find it relaxing and instructional. I went on that and found it an interesting activity. It gives you a perspective on the size of the Preserves and the history surrounding the area.
This is a good place to take out of town friends or relatives who are bored with the usual casino/club scene. Not everyone is into that element of Vegas, and it's awesome to be able to recommend an outdoors activity with fresh air, interesting things to see and a peaceful, serene and relaxing atmosphere. There's also plenty of benches to sit on scattered around the park when you just want to rest and enjoy the lovely atmosphere. You won't feel like you're even in Vegas! It's like having a getaway from the usual noisy activities without going a long distance.
I noticed a few misters that you can stand under in the hot weather. When the temps get really hot, the indoor buildings will also keep you cool and refreshed. Probably the two nicest times of year would be Spring and late Fall from the standpoint of pleasant weather. I recommend wearing a hat even in cool weather, the Vegas sun is hot! Not all exhibits are open year round. The butterfly habitat wasn't open when I went, but it apparently opens around mid-March so if there's something you especially want to see, check their website and find out what the schedules are or if there's anything special going on the day you visit. You can buy tickets online at their website or at the entrance.
I highly recommend Springs Preserve, as well as the Divine Cafe onsite, which opens during the week at 11am for lunch and on weekends for brunch. The food at the cafe is quite good, it's high quality, not the typical stuff you might expect. You have a view of the Preserves on their patio seating. There's lots of nice photo opportunities, so bring your camera!
I have only been to Springs Preserve one time, so didn't get a chance to see everything, but will definitely go back again!
