| - I came here twice for dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the place. It's a tiny place with modern decor. The first time I came here, the TVs were showing horse racing and the second time was showing another sport. The music choice here is a bit odd as they play a mixture of 90s and 2000s music and it doesn't feel like it fits/matches the aura of the place.
The first time I came here, I ordered the spicy miso broth and the vegetable medley (I asked for the mushrooms replaced with something else) with ponzu and goma sauces and a side of brown rice. I also ordered the cherry blossom tea because it was something very new and unique-sounding so I had to try it. The cherry blossom tea tasted like green tea. I was confused, thinking maybe they gave me plain green tea but as I drank more, I could taste a hint of something else. However, whatever it was, became overpowered by a green tea flavor.
Melanie (I think that's her name) was our server and she was awesome. She was always smiling and happy, always checking in making sure everything was okay, if we needed anything else, and overall gave really good customer service.
The second time I came, I ordered the exact same thing (I don't have other options as a vegetarian) but with Japanese iced coffee instead of cherry blossom green tea. The Japanese iced coffee tasted like plain iced coffee but with what tasted like brown sugar? It's a subtly sweet flavor, not what I expected, but I didn't hate it either and I'd order it again.
This time, Azi was our server. She wasn't friendly and had a bit of an attitude. She didn't care to ask us about our meal or check in on us. She would walk by without saying anything but would check in with other guests. Very different from Melanie's customer service. However, this one server, a guy named Shannon, started to check in on us and he was extremely kind and more than willing to help us if we needed anything. He checked in on us a number of times, always asked if we needed more broth or wanted more water, he was superb. He even offered to take our pots to the back and put them in to-go containers and wrap them up for us! I was shocked at his willingness to do such a thing for us, and I was so happy to see that level of customer service. He even marked one of the containers so I'd know which one was mine.
For my food, I was skeptical to try a miso broth because I grew up eating miso soup a lot (I come from an Asian family) and couldn't imagine eating it as a spicy hot pot broth. I was, however, pleasantly surprised at the flavor and enjoyed every bite of it. I was also very happy with the portions given for the vegetable medley because, as a vegetarian, that was all I could eat there and it filled me up nicely.
We were only allowed to pick two of the three different sauces which saddens me because in Hawaii, we're used to having 10 - 20 different sauce options that we can pick from freely and even mix and match sauces to create our own unique sauces.
For dessert, we ordered the milk chocolate fondue with "berries and bananas" (strawberries and bananas). I had some expectations of the fondue since it's in the name of the restaurant but there wasn't anything special or unique about it. Yojie might benefit from doing something unique or special to their fondue because, in reality, it is plain fondue (it is, after all, called Yojie Japanese Fondue, so do something unique with it).
I hope management acknowledges the customer service skills of Shannon and Melanie because they were so attentive to us. Melanie even remembered us the second time we came back! I will continue to come back here again but I'd hope to not get Azi as our server again.
