| - Based on a positive review that I saw here (which has since been filtered), I had my hair cut by Allyson. I'm not sure if cut is the right word... maybe hacked describes it better, as she just randomly hacked and thinned my hair...on one side only!
I told her that this technique would just cause my head to look like it was cut by a lawn mower, to which she responded that she was a "professional" and knew what she was doing.
The result was hideous. Lawn mower is being generous.... it was more like a weedwacker gone amuck.
Actually, hairdressers in Quebec do not have to be licensed to practice here, nor do they have to pass any exams or do any continuing education. They do not have any professional standards and guidelines that they must uphold. They are not monitored by any organization, and there is no where to file complaint.
There are many professional organizations in Quebec..... doctors, notaries, electricians, contractors, tree cutters, etc.... but haircutting is not included amongst them. (They are issued some type of hairdresser card by some group, but this is just so they can purchase products at suppliers that are closed to the public, in order that they can then sell this at a mark-up)
Anyone can call themselves a "professional" haircutter.
What did I learn? If you feel that a haircut is going in the wrong direction... say something! A true "professional" will respect what you have to say. It's your body, after all. If the haircutter ignores you, or says "trust me, I'm a professional", get up and leave. You can always have it fixed elsewhere.
