Among Madison's modest museum selection, the Chazen stands out as the best. It's part of the UW system, and its collection seems to try and cover the entire breadth of human artistic history. And I appreciate the variety. Even if they don't have the prestige of better-endowed museums, their selection is tasteful, sensible, and interesting. They also have samples of such sought-after artists such as Miro, Gainsborough, Warhol, even a modest Rothko. They also have archaeological selections such as ancient Roman coins, Hellenic pottery, and other works.
As for their contemporary art...
