I first read about Cornish pasties in Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" nearly 10 years ago. Shadow, the main character, described them as real stick-to-your-ribs food with an astonishing filling, "a savory delight wrapped in hot pastry."
Every pasty I've ever had has been rather disappointing and never quite lived up to the expectations Gaiman set up for his readers.
But I've found it here!
For $10 and some change, you can get a delicious, flaky-crusted pasty with an amazing meat and carrot filling, mashed potatoes, and succulent peas, and it's WORTH EVERY PENNY.
And I enjoyed this long-sought meal with a can of Strongbow cider.
Without exaggeration, this was one of the greatest meals I've ever had. Proof positive that "bar food" can be top quality.
Furthermore, the place is cool. It's like the local hang-out where everyone seems to know each other and they welcome newcomers. I love it.
