| - 1.5 stars, but I'll generously round up to two.
I've never really considered staying at the MGM in all my years in Vegas, but when I couldn't find a centrally located hotel, with a good pool for under $500 a night I booked a room here.
I've also never had to wait till 3pm to actually check in ANYWHERE, not just Las Vegas, but the MGM had us wait until then for a basic non-view, nothing special room.
When we arrived at 9am and left our stuff with the Bell Desk we were informed "we work on tips, so please keep that in mind". Um DUH! I get needing that reminder for a 20-something, but my mom and I are much older and the reminder came off as distasteful.
The distance from the rooms to the strip is probably as far as any other hotel (except the Cosmo), but the MGM makes it utterly confusing. In the same fashion getting to the pool is a trek as well.
So enough about inconvenience, this hotel has not been updated since the good ol'days. It feels old, it looks old and the rooms are pitiful. There are no coffee makers, refrigerators or even a floor mat for the bathtub. The only lock on the door is turning the handle up, are you kidding me?! Oh and our TV didn't work - kept saying "there is no signal" but each time we called they said it would be 1+ hour till they could come fix it and we needed to be in the room - who sits around in their room for hours waiting for a repair? Horrible customer service = MGM.
Finally, and most importantly as a 30-something who is happily married and was just looking for a fun and relaxing girls weekend away, this hotel failed big time!
The pool was supposed to be the highlight of the trip, but so many things went wrong.
FIRST - we were informed the ONLY way to get a shaded seat is to purchase a Private Reserve seat for $35, and even still an umbrella is not guaranteed as they are first come first serve so we were told to be there at 8am when they open. We arrived a few moments early and were first in line at 8am, we needed to make sure we got an umbrella! When we checked in at 8am we were informed the Private Reserve pool was closed for the day as a private event had rented it beforehand and the Private Reserve chairs had been moved over the Lazy Room, - cool with us! EXCEPT the Lazy River doesn't open until 9am so "come back then". WHAT ON EARTH??? We reserved our chairs at 4pm the day before, why weren't we told about this change then??? So we we made our way over the Lazy River entrance where we were joined by a dozen or so people forced to line up in the hot sun and wait for our umbrella. The overwhelmed staff didn't know what was going on when 9am rolled around and the Private Reserve chairs were all over the place. We were told they were poolside, but apparently at the Lazy River that wasn't possible "because we don't want people who didn't pay for the umbrella benefiting from the shade they provide, so all the private reserve chairs have to stay together in the middle." FINE! We finally got set up and my mom got her shade.
SECOND - we were informed they don't rent inter-tubes for their lazy river, you must purchase them for $20-$25 - hello rip off!!
Apparently the handful of miserable (no smiles, more like scowls and complaining about their job) lifeguards are not there to maintain river part of the lazy river, but just watch. Floating in an inter tube because impossible by noon, as everyone decided to take their party to the lazy river and just hang out. Our inter tubes couldn't even get through and not one drunk person had the courtesy to move so those of us on inter tubes could get through. It was a cluster.
THIRD - and most importantly the poolside service. On a Saturday that was slammed there were TWO people taking pool-side orders - COME ON!!! At one point I'd ordered a drink, only to have her bring my drink 15min later and disappear with my credit card. The next two times she passed by (over a 25min period) she assured me she had my card and would bring it back. I finally had to go find her to get it back. Needless to say when it came time to order another drink I walked myself to the bar. And when we wanted to order lunch the two people were nowhere to be found for over 30min and when they finally wandered by to serve those standing in the lazy river I snagged her to order a burger. I didn't expect greatness, but it was dry and horrible.
If you want a less expensive, but not cheap ($300 a night), no basics room, overrun pool with non-existent poolside service, an adventure walk to the strip, and extra fees everywhere you look, the MGM is the place for you.
Me? I'll fork out the $500/might for a legit hotel on my next visit.
