Wow! Who would have thought that baked layers of folded buttery pastry with a generous sugar and butter filling can be so good. This is my first time trying an Kouign-Amann and I was very pleasantly surprised. I joined the short line-up and was greeted by the sweet buttery aroma of croissants and the coveted Kouign-Amanns that were coming straight out from the oven. Lo and behold, I knew right away I was going to get a freshly baked batch. Considering the size, I decided to only get half of a Kouign-Amann and walked out the store with a beaming smile as if I had discovered the most wonderful pastry ever created. I knew I had to try it while it's still hot. The outer layer is surrounded by a caramelized crust, similar to a creme brûlée crunch and the inside had the hot creamy mixture of sugar and butter. It tasted absolutely amazing! Now, I wish I had bought the full size Kouign-Amann! Until my next visit to Montreal, I'll be back for more.
