| - A couple months back I took a vacation to see my parents, and realized that my dad's old Rado was no longer running. I wanted to make sure it got a proper service and I wanted to support a local business, so instead of taking it back to New York to my go-to watch shop I took it to Alson. They quoted me $55 for a "full service" and battery change from an "on-site watch technician", from the description, I thought they would (at the very least) change the battery and perform a cleaning on it.
When I went to pick up the watch, they informed me that the watch had "failed a pressure test" (something I already knew would happen, since this particular Rado isn't meant to be a diving watch), and returned the watch with a broken strap. Granted, the strap on the watch wasn't some kind of heirloom, but it certainly wasn't broken when we dropped it off. Looking at the watch on the way home, it was clear that they hadn't even bothered to give it a cleaning. They simply changed out the battery, put it in the pressure testing device (which broke the strap), and then returned it to me, for $55. So essentially, they charge $55 for a combination battery change and strap-breaking service.
I gave the watch to my dad and let him know I'd just get him a new strap and to NOT use Alson for anything in the future. Apparently later in the day he called Alson to ask them what they did to the watch (besides breaking the strap), and they very calmly explained that their "full service" only included a battery change, and that they had "made a note" about the loose strap, so they were not in any way responsible for the damage.
It's really sad to see a family-owned Cleveland business give such poor service, but considering that they can't even act professionally during the simple servicing of a quartz-movement watch, I'm definitely not buying any watches from Alson in the future.
