| - I only went here once. I decided on Banfield because of the location and because I currently take my dog to Petsmart to get groomed. I do have a veterinarian that I usually see, but she is an hour away and my dog was sick, so I needed something more convenient. This experience solidified that the hour drive is well worth it.
The first thing the vet tells me is that my dog will need oral surgery to remove baby teeth. My vet has pointed this out, but always told me that if they are not bothering her, it's not a big deal. So immediately I was skeptical but thought, hey it's been awhile since I've seen my normal vet, maybe they are at the point they need removed. Then she tells me my dogs nails are too long. This is on a Monday. On Sunday, the day before, I was at Petsmart, the same Petsmart that I am now standing in and PAID $14 TO GET MY DOG'S NAILS TRIMMED. So now I'm really annoyed. She continued to exam my dog and suggest other things I need to be doing, of course other things that cost money and do not seem necessary. Keep in mind, I brought my dog in for vomiting. Finally she sits down and says that she looks fine so the next step is to try to determine why she is vomiting. She starts naming off all of the reasons she could be sick. From pancreatitis to heart disease to a parasites to worms, etc etc etc. She was naming off so many scenarios that I literally stopped listening. Then she goes, a 'nurse' will be right in to review our wellness plan.
So the nurse comes in with a brochure for a wellness plan. I would be locked into a one year contract at $36/month to get unlimited exams. The vet assured me that we would be seeing a lot of each other so this would be worth it. I immediately heard 'contract' and said no. I would have to go to the vet once a month to even make it worth it. Then the nurse asks if I would like to follow through with the vet's treatment plan. I asked what all it would include and she named off bloodwork, de-worming medication, etc. The total cost being over $300 and they could do it all today. I started to agree but felt so uncomfortable. So at the last minute I just said I needed time to decide. I paid $40 for the office visit, which I was fine with. I was glad to have the assurance that she looks okay. If she continues to get sick, I will take her to my normal vet and drive the hour.
By no means am I saying that the veterinarian was incompetent. I just felt like the whole situation was a sales push and made everything that the vet said seem so insincere. I was there for the health of my pet and the vet was there to sell me things. I have worked many years in sales, I can see through the tactics. I would warn anyone from coming here and getting sucked into these contracts. I can see how it would all escalate very quickly. Unfortunately not only will I never bring my dog to Banfield, I will also never take her to get groomed at Petsmart again.
