| - I grew up in small towns, and any time we went to visit my grandma for a weekend, I remember asking for a few bucks so that I could go see a movie at the small theatre in town. It was my first foray into independence because I was allowed to walk down the alley and through the neighbor's yard to get there on my own, and I have a ton of great memories of watching all sorts of shows there in the 90s. They've upgraded it since, and I still go at times, so this is where I get my perspective when I talk about The Roxy.
The Roxy is Airdrie's little hometown cinema. Boasting a whole two screens, this Landmark theatre typically runs at least one family-friendly show. The prices are great, considering the next closest option at CrossIron Mills is likely to run you over $40 for two movies and snacks, this can make for a cheap date night, a good way to get out of the house, or a fun and affordable family movie night.
Don't expect a ton of extras here - you get your typical movie snacks (which, as usual, are a bit overpriced), a simple projection screen, and a decent sound system. I've watched some pretty good action movies here, and I wasn't disappointed at all - the sound was big enough for the room, clear, and not distorted. The pictures were clear and everything was sync'd up well, which is more than I can say for some much more expensive movies I've seen at other places.
The Roxy also still has a cheap night, which is Tuesdays, so it can get busier. It's never as crazy as the Calgary theatres, so I'm not afraid to stop by even then. In addition, if you choose to get on the email list, you'll be treated to loads of offers, from reduced snack prices and early showing to BOGOs and discounts on tickets. If you're a movie buff, it's worth the once-a-week email.
Final verdict? If you live nearby, just try it out on a movie you're on the fence about - you won't lose a lot of money to see it, and you'll get to see how the theatre is the perfect addition to the smaller town. I'm sure you'll be back.
