| - I've been a long time (10+ years) customer & fan of Mario's (M.) work; so much so that I'll fly back from Seattle (originally from Toronto) to get my haircut here, instead of just staying in Seattle to find someone more local.
I've visited a lot of barber shops in the US and Canada; Mario is as good as they come - a true master artisan of hairstyling. Mario has a few advantages that put him a bar above his competition from the vast majority (I'd posit 99.9999%): Mario truly loves his work; he exudes the passion about making his customers look their best, and he deeply understands the complexities around how to design and shape your hair around the bigger picture (especially in terms of how the hair grows out over time) as he explains and executes his styling. I cannot put into works how good Mario is at his work - it's something that you'll have to see for yourself to fully understand why I have such a high regard and praise for him.
I think what makes the experience even better is his personality. He remembers you through the years, remembers your conversations, hairstyle preferences, and most of all, recommendations of alterations he can make that would make your hair look even better. His instincts are incredible and his wisdom goes beyond the years he's put into his work - it becomes even more apparent when you look at other hairstylists that sell similarly priced cuts.
My favourite traits of Mario's are his humility and his humanity. I have never once heard him brag about how good of a stylist he is, and I've never heard him speak badly of other stylists. His ability to let his work speak for itself is uncanny - especially in a day and age where social media reigns supreme, and a single bad review can sink an otherwise thriving business.
VALUE FOR MONEY: 11/10. I've never been more impressed with the longevity of my haircuts than with the ones I get here, and this is after living in the USA for over 2 years and trying all kinds of cuts (from budget to high-end). I've never paid more than $40 CAD per cut, but every time I've noticed that I can go 4 weeks to 6 months without "needing" another cut, because of how much farther ahead Mario thinks about hair growing out (and still being able to style it at every stage of hair growth)
QUALITY: 11/10. It's gotten to a point where I literally don't even talk about what kind of haircut I want anymore - Mario's known my taste in hair for so long that he constantly raises the bar, all the while speaking jovially and enjoying his (relatively short) time with me - the cuts themselves (including wash) never take longer than 35 minutes, from entrance to exit. The consistency is clearly there too - his cuts always have this "wow" moment at the end, as if he reads your mind and uses your hair as the canvas on which to build a masterpiece.
SERVICE: 11/10. What I said before holds true even now - over 12 years after getting my first haircut from him (at a different business, but he seems to be here to stay). His reputation precedes itself - never failing to provide a good experience, regardless of the season, how he's feeling, or what the current schedule looks like.
OVERALL: 11/10. Seriously, I wish Yelp gave me a way to give more than 5/5 - Mario deserves every accolade or award he ever gets bestowed upon him - past, present, or future. The man is a genius, and I cannot and will not ever believe otherwise, given how much passion he still exudes about his job, this far into knowing him.
I can't recommend him enough - for any kind of hair. My mom and my family have been seeing him for hairstyling for as long as I can remember - and that should say something, given how much emphasis my family puts into the quality of their own work, and their expectations of quality of other's work.
