| - I know that this review is probably going to evoke some negative feelings among the dedicated clientele that frequent Union Hair Parlor. However, unlike many of the great experiences that I read of here, I did not have that same experience.
Upon moving back to the Madison area, I began the illusive search for a new stylist. My search brought me to Yelp, as it often has, and I decided that 33 reviews and 5 stars was likely a good indication of this salon. However, and in my opinion, I believe that Union is at most a 3 start experience.
Lets talk about the things that I liked about the salon first. I saw Jessica and she seemed really nice and made me feel comfortable. The interior of the salon is pretty snazzy and I love love love that they carry VERB products. I also appreciated that I could book online and just show up for my appointment.
Now, the not so great parts....I went in for an ombre and a hair cut. My hair is straight and long and I was very clear upon what I wanted from the cut. Like others, I have an issue talking about coloring, so I came armed with some photos of what I wanted. The ombres that I like, are some where between subtle and over the top. I had multiple photo and Jessica talked me through what she was going to do. I agreed but honestly who really knows how a dye job is ever going to turn out until the end.
After the mandatory waiting time as the dye penetrates my hair, we get on with this show. However, this is sort of where it gets painful. I'm fairly certain that she did not condition my hair. My hair gets super tangled anytime I fail to shampoo it and blow drying becomes a pain, literally. This is exactly what happened for me. The normally enjoyable shampoo became painful and I couldnt wait until she was done. The cut that she did wasnt much better. My hair had no movement and while I didnt hate it, it wasnt worth the money that I was going to spend. Like the shampoo, the blowdry was the most painful one that I have ever had. She used her fingers to go through my hair (which is thick too) and it literally felt like someone was trying to rip the hair from my scalp. All the time and pain aside, my supposed ombre was basically an all over color with some highlighting. Not to mention that it turned out wayyyy more red than we anticipated.
I really wanted to like UHP and I would have given Jessica another chance but I feel like a salon of this caliber should really know better. My over $200 day at the salon was a waste as my hair really didn't look much different from when I walked through their doors.
I am sure that UHP is great for a standard cut but even so, I won't be going back, ever.
