| - The scones: the best thing I put in my mouth while in Madison. I know, you're surprised. And don't get me wrong... the cheese, the ice cream, the beer, the Farmer's Market -- all great -- but the SCONES. For some reason, I've been generally non-exposed to scones. In my mind, they were akin to biscotti (dry, crumbly, desperate to be dipped in tea). No, friends. They are more like my (and every true Southerner's) best friend, the biscuit -- the perfect balance of light/dense, not overly dry, and beautifully buttery, pushed over-the-top thanks to a light-touch glaze. At Lazy Jane's they come in an assortment of flavors. The blueberry was bursting with in-season berries; the lemon, subtly tart; the cheddar, an amazing savory scone; chocolate chip scone, like a biscuit brownie! The only pastry letdown was the morning bun, which by comparison, was bland and surprisingly dry; skip it.
I found the spot incredibly charming. Waiting in line to order, peering in the pastry cases, and at the hand-written specials. Though we got there fairly early on Sunday, they were quite busy. Luckily, we snagged a great seat upstairs. The house is decorated with eclectic antique finds, and feels like an oh-so-cozy brunch spot. Yogurt with granola was inadequately portioned (more like: granola with yogurt), though the granola was crunchy, hearty, and delish. I thought the chorizo scramble was a win, but hubby was less impressed. Cash only is a little annoying. But ultimately worth it!
