  • Getting right to the point ... Pros: academically excellent, should be considered a Public Ivy, competitiveness brings out the best in you, once you scrape past the Greeks there are some intelligent individualistic students, a beautiful Quad, the Student Union, nice "down home" townies, students from rural towns / St Louis metro / Indy metro / out of state / out of the country are cool, cheap living, and lots of good eats on Green Street ... and actually all around "Chambana." Cons: middle of nowhere, oppressive location, too far from a major city for road tripping and being able to manage a heavy academic workload, obnoxious Greeks, crappy weather most of the academic year (but the few weeks of peak color are beautiful), many North Shore students, Chicago meat heads, alcohol and sleazy places to drink it are many people's "raison d'etre," and occasional faculty members with their heads so far up their tenured asses that they aren't interested in teaching or making themselves accessible I am writing this review for the benefit of potential undergraduates from a distant out of state location and potential grad students as well. For the undergrads, one review voiced that if you fall outside of traditional college demographics, this is NOT a fun place to go to school. I could easily see that. For graduate students, it isn't as diverse as one might expect of such a highly reputed school. The actual diversity is there, but the factions don't mix. There is a very state-centric attitude and if you don't come from Chicagoland and don't plan to settle in Chicagoland upon finishing, "those people," the bulk of U of I, can be somewhat dismissive. Similarly, the alumni links are more tailgate worthy than they are for networking. Bottom line: U of I can be enticing for its top of the heap rankings in engineering and accounting, among other fields, but it's not like all the available slots in those fields are only reserved for U of I grads. If you are from Illinois and know "the lay of the land" then, sure, do take advantage of this bargain in public education, relatively speaking. However, you can also find and consider other great public universities to put on your shopping list if from out of the region.
