| - Five stars for the food, zero stars for the atmosphere.
My girlfriend and I had reservatiions for a Friday at 8:30. We generally go to Delmonico's when we choose a high end steak type place, but we wanted to try something different.
The negative part first, the atmosphere.. We were unlucky enough to be seated at a tiny table with a long communal bench on one side, like one might be seated at the Cheesecake Factory, whose atmosphere is probably a bit nicer than Craftseak. I sat on the bench side and my girlfriend in the chair opposite me. The bench jolted and rocked any time one of us on it leaned back or was seated. Diners on either side of us were about a foot away at most. There was a couple to my left, and a group of four to my right. Unfortunately the group of four included one "loud talker" An obnoxious one at that. I could hear every word she (loud talker) said, while straining to hear a word my girlfriend said over the surprisingly loud music (blues rock, an interesting choice). Bright lights plus loud music plus diners on either side of us practically rubbing elbows equals just an awful atmosphere.
Now, in fairness, being seated to an extremely loud person was just bad luck. And if you happen to get a stand alone table, or one of the very nice looking semi-circular booths, as opposed to one of seats along the communal bench, your experience will be much better. But still, the over all atmosphere with the loud music is just not very inviting. When we left, we saw some people that had worse seats than we did. They were at a table in the middle of the bar area, and everyone that was leaving like us, or coming in to be seated had to practically brush up against them to get by. I sure hope they just dropped in to see if there was a table available and didn't have reservations in advance. It may sound a bit nit-picky to go on and on about the atmosphere, but if you are going to spend $300 to $400 for two, for a simple 3 course steak or seafood dinner, a nice atmosphere should be part of the package.
On to the positive, the food. The food was outstanding. My girlfriend had the filet, and I had the surf and turf, with a filet and a half Maine lobster. Unlike other reviewers here, our steaks were cooked perfectly. Very rare for the girlfriend, and medium-rare for me. Both were served exactly right. The steaks and lobster were both about as good as they get. The sides we ordered were perfect as well. We had tartare for an appetizer and it was simply amazing. For dessert we had the monkey bread that other reviewers have raved about. It was good, though nothing that special in my opinion.
So, absolutely no complaints on the food, nor the service for that matter. You can't really get super attentive service when the only room the server has to stand in is directly behind the person in the chair. But our waiter did his best under the circumstances, and the overall service was fine. Also, our waiter was very helpful when we asked for help in selecting a wine, and ended up suggesting a California Pinot that turnd out to be very good, and at $96 was one of the least expensive wines on the list.
The simple fact is, there is nothing complicated about steaks and shellfish and classic sides like spinach, potatoes, asparagus, etc. In the price range of Craftsteak, there are probably over a dozen restaurants in Las Vegas that can provide this fare every bit as delicious as Craftsteak presented, but with a nice atmosphere too.
