It pains me to do this. I started eating donuts from Sugar back in the days of the South End Food Truck Friday. I was blown away by the fritters, and pretty much everything else I tried. They were fresh, flavors were bold without being overbearing and the dough was perfect.
I tried some from the brick and mortar store when they first opened and was not as impressed. I waited a while to see if they could get the kinks worked out. Within the last month, I have been back twice. Both times the shop was tidy, the presentation well crafted and visually appealing but lacking big time in the flavor department. I got blackberry lemon in which you could see the color and a few seeds but could not taste the blackberry or lemon. I got a "fresh strawberry" which looks like the perfect Homer Simpson donut, but it was woefully lacking strawberry (as in couldn't even taste it) and what was worse, the oil had been over heated so the donut tasted a tad fishy. A few others had the same issues. The fritter was still good but nothing compared to what used to come off the truck and I tried one of the savory breakfast sandwiches, which worked well.
Sadly, though the flavor combinations are enticing, the flavors aren't there anymore. I think I'll be sticking with Your Mom's Donuts from now on in spite of the fact that they are pricier. The flavors are more exciting and even the run of the mill stuff is executed better than what Sugar has turned out for me the last few times.
