| - My friend was craving authentic Mexican food, so we stumbled across Barrio Cafe as being one of the highest rated Mexican restaurants in the area. I believe that the Barrio Cafe specializes in Yucatan Peninsula-style Mexican cuisine. First things I noticed were the amazing Dia De Los Meurtos murals all around the restaurant. You can see the restaurant painted with the traditional imagery, and the murals are all over the back lot. The restaurant had a wonderful ambiance. We came in during the lunch hour, and I was pleasantly surprised to walk in to a live performance of a man playing the Spanish guitar. He played beautifully! I ordered the Pescado tacos (fish tacos), and I got to try my friend's Cochinita Pibil tacos and my other friend's Chilaquiles red mole.
I absolutely LOVED my fish tacos. The fish were perfectly battered, and all the cream sauces and flavors complimented the fish tacos very well. I'd even say that Barrio Cafe's fish tacos are on my top 3 list of the best fish tacos I'd ever have. I ordered the side salad to go along with my tacos. My salad came with mixed greens, cotija cheese, cranberries, pico de gallo, and a balsamic vinaigrette. As simple as my salad was, it was delicious as well.
Barrio Cafe's Cochinita Pibul tacos are excellent! The Cochinita Pibul is prepared by slow roasting pork overnight in a banana leaf with sour orange and achiote (some type of Mayan spice). You can definitely taste the tanginess in the pork from the sour orange.
I thought my friend's Chilaquiles with red mole was good too. The mole wasn't overly sweet as most moles taste to me since they're made with chocolate, and the mole had a nice smokiness to it.
