| - We like discovering places to eat on the northside, because we live on Observatory Hill. Maxes Allegheny Tavern is close to our home. The inside is pretty cool, it's all original, has a nice tile floor. The hostess who greeted us was very nice, hooray for that. The Business supposedly started in 1890? There is still a lot of the original Decour in the building. The menu is huge, a very lot to choose from. My husband got the German beer sampler, I loved all four. I ordered a glass of red wine, not much to choose from, The choices were pretty bad. Although a bottle of wine, they had more of a nicer selection. They have Foxhorn wine on their wine menu. Yuck. I got the pot roast sandwich, my choice of side was coleslaw. My husband got the sauerbraten and his choices of sides were warm German potato salad and spätzle. I really like the flavor of the sauce on his entrée. All was OK, our server was polite. The prices were very reasonable. Cocktails and desserts were very low-priced. I had the German chocolate cake for dessert, the picture looks amazing, the cake was not so amazing. Perhaps they do not make it there, it kind of tasted like a frozen product. My husband had the Apple strudel, I liked it a lot, although he was disappointed that it was microwaved and not baked in the oven to warm it up. I would go back to try more food from their menu, I saw loaded potato skins at the table next to us, definitely would order those as a meal. My husband says to give the restaurant four stars, he has spent time in Germany and thought that the food was pretty good.
