| - A Cookie & A Cupcake is an overrated disappointment!
I have been here a few times over the years, giving them chance after chance to impress me because everyone else seems to really love this place. But after my visit this afternoon, I really don't think I'll be stopping in again.
A friend and I decided that we wanted to get a few different cupcakes and cookies to sample. Walking in, the store smelled like wonderful baked goods, the display was cute, and the employee who greeted us was friendly. But as I got closer to the case, I noticed that a lot of the cupcakes (the chocolate ones in particular) looked as if they hadn't risen properly, and sat halfway down in the their liner paper. This was peculiar, since cupcakes should have that beautiful, full, puffy top, and these were short and dense-looking. I thought maybe they just used extra-large liners or something like that...but looking through pictures on their website and here on Yelp, the heights of the cupcakes vary, some are above the liner, some are way below. In my mind, this raise questions about the shop's consistency...
That aside, we ended up getting four cupcakes and two cookies:
Chocolate Cupcake- The frosting tasted exactly like chocolate pudding. Maybe you would like that, but I was not a fan. The chocolate cake was very bland, dry, and a bit dense.
PB Lovers Cupcake- The employee told us that this was her favorite cupcake. It had a chocolate cake base, which was the same as the chocolate cupcake above. However this had a small dollop of peanut butter frosting and a peanut butter crumble. This cupcake was the best we had since it was halfway decent, but was similar quality to what you could find at nice supermarket. Nothing special whatsoever.
Vanilla Cupcake- This was my least favorite. The vanilla cake tasted distinctly like boxed cake mix. The vanilla buttercream on top was dense. It had an overpowering and off-putting butter flavor, and lacked vanilla flavor.
Pumpkin Cupcake- The pumpkin cupcake was pretty dull, without intense flavors. The flavor I did discern tasted like artificial cinnamon.
Double Chocolate cookie- This cookie was awful. It had no flavor, and was very dry, like perhaps it was baked several days ago and was left sitting on the shelf for a while.
Mexican Wedding cookie- Not a bad cookie, had a nice crumbly texture, but was just as good quality as any supermarket cookie.
I am a huge fan of any and all baked goods, and I wanted to love this cute shop. But seriously, take my advice, don't buy into the hype. These cupcakes and cookies are mediocre at best!
