| - Part of the allure of the Downtown Cocktail Room is idea of finding your way into a semi-secret bar (which is well publicized by us on Yelp). I just wish they hadn't put a neon cocktail sign out in front as a clue.
Since I'm a pretty crafty person (not in a paint by numbers kind of way, but in a Mission Impossible kind of way) it took about 2 seconds to bust my way into this cocktail joint. Frankly, I wanted more of a challenge. Downtown Cocktail Room, you made it too frickin easy. Had you been a real speakeasy, the prohibition squad would have shut you down on day one. You know how it would have went down ......

The here and now -
Once inside, you find a cozy bar, which is dimly lit. It's the kind of place where you could literally fade into the background if you just didn't move. "Boo! ... Sorry for being creepy and making you spill your drink" .... It also reminded me a lot of the Saints & Sinners Bar of Culver City, which is now closed (but the memory lives on courtesy of the Yelp archives).
Since this was our first stop on a Friday night, I was pleased to find the place relatively quiet (at 8:00 p.m.) and with available stools to land at the counter bar. Known for their designer cocktails, the mixologist didn't disappoint. Disclaimer: For me, just breaking out the shaker, means I'm getting a fancy drink. The prices were good and I was pleased with the vibe of the place. Since it was a little early in the evening, there wasn't too much hustle and bustle.
At the time, it was a nice respite from things to come on Fremont Street. A place to get things started with a couple of drinks and get up to speed. Yes, there's a system to the consumption of adult beverages, especially when you know you'll soon be switching to 40 ounce Modelo Especial beers and exchanging high fives with random homeless people watching an AC/DC tribute band play at the 3rd Street stage.
Early in the night, Downtown Cocktail Room is a nice place to chill and enjoy a couple of drinks. Later on, I'm sure the place picks up the pace. Stop here to test your orienteering skills (without cheating to research a point of entry online) and to enjoy a well crafted cocktail.
TIP - If you make it out onto Fremont Street, DO exchange some enthusiastic high fives with strangers, but remember to generously apply hand sanitizer immediately afterward (but in a covert way). Cheers!
