| - I'll be honest, I stopped in here after Tammie Coe was closed (without updating their website, or door, Yelp) at 2 on Monday and after discovering that The Cupcake Cafe is internet only....
But I think these frustrations were fate's way of taking me to Urban Cookies. My own little nirvana-from-now-on. I walked in the cute little shop still stewing in frustration and then the smell hit me. Don't get me wrong, I'm a cupcake-kid, but there's just something about the way cookies smell when they bake.
They have some adorable displays up. About a dozen different flavors of cupcakes and 6 or seven different cookies. Then the display to the right had Gluten-free, Vegan Baked Donuts and cookie options. As I'm not just tolerant but down-right in love with gluten I opted for a selection from the front case. I got the Olive-Oil cupcake with Orange Blossom and Rosewater Frosting (spoiler- they won Cupcake Wars), Chocolate Velvet (Red velvet minus the dye!) with Cream Cheese Frosting, the Chocolate on Chocolate, the Vanilla on Vanilla, Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese and Lemon Cake with Lemon Buttercream. Not one was anything short of delicious. Normally, I live for Kreative Kupcakes in Avondale, but these appealed to the grown-up in me like nothing else has. These cupcakes are not sugar sweet confections. The flavors are bold. Some savory, some sweet, but nothing I'd classify as as a kid's treat, these are gourmet.
I also bought 4 milk chocolate chip cookies, 1 snickerdoodle and 1 peanut butter. First, I ate the peanut butter cookie on the way to the car. I was that hungry and it smelled that effing good. I'll say that there is no slouching on portion size. The cookies are easily 4-5 inches in diameter and solid. Nice and chewy too. All were delicious. My husband is a cookie snob and he proclaimed them, "The best. Ever."
As a side note, the baker/cashier/sweetest young man I've ever met was so very kind and funny that my bad mood evaporated in one minute flat. He kept up the jokes while I picked my cakes and seemed determined that my afternoon would start being better right then and there. I can't overemphasize the importance of customer service these days. It's why I'm choosing more and more to purchase from local mom-and-pops. People like him will keep the store going even during its off-days.
Easily makes my foodie list for travelers!
