I am a journalist and was visiting Phoenix from New York City to write an article highlighting things to do and see in the area. My husband was an architecture major and is a Frank Lloyd Wright fan. So I made sure a visit to Taliesin West was part of the itinerary. While the space itself is fascinating, our tour guide dampened my experience. At the beginning of the tour, the guide greeted several of the guests standing in front of him, including my husband. My husband is Italian-American and I am African-American. He shook my husband's hand, skipped me and shook the hand of the white woman next to me. That snub did not go unnoticed and I was uncomfortable for the rest of the tour. Towards the end of the tour, we had to leave early. Again, the guide shook my husband's hand and not mine. It was pretty clear to me why he didn't extend his hand either time, and unfortunately that negative encounter tainted my overall experience at Taliesin West.
