  • "There is nothing going on in downtown Pittsburgh"- false. While downtown has certainly has developed this reputation, it is not really the case. One of the most recent efforts to undo this stigma is the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership's "Project Po-pup". This initiative takes unused storefronts in the downtown district and gives them to small businesses and artists so that the space gets used and adds to the beauty and culture of the neighborhood. Dream Cream is one such place. The founders have a unique approach to their business in that a portion of the proceeds go to help the dreams of the people who volunteer to work there. This is how it works: You have a need for money. Say you want to start your own small business, or you have an art project and you are short on grants. Or maybe you just need money to get yourself to your sister's for the birth of your nephew... whatever the need those chosen by the owners to partner with Dream Cream commit to a certain number of hours in the shop, and a portion of the earning of their sponsored flavor go to their Dream. OK, so that is how it works. Now, as for the quality and the establishment itself, pretty awesome! My girlfriend volunteered there for a coworker who wants to open a small business so I stopped in to check it out. I had some kind of a peanut butter caramel swirl or something in vanilla ice cream and it was delicious! It truly was. There isn't anywhere inside to sit, and the interior is pretty spartan. I don't know if they are planning on anything further with this- they haven't been open long. They are right next to "Taste of Dahn Tahn" (a place that is better than it's name would imply) and their signage laves a little to be desired right now. I hope this project works for them. This is the perfect way to cap off dinner before catching a show... or drinks... or ever just a night in market square (it is a very short one block walk). I could also be easily talked into wandering over there at lunch. Check it out! And remember, it is for a good cause!
