| - Late night in Gastonia waiting for a friend to get off work and I need somewhere with WiFi. My first thought was, "Oh God, nothing is open out here after 9:00". Luckily Yelp informed me of what seemed to be an artsy coffee shop/beer joint that was open and super close to my friends new flat.
For a Tuesday night this place was popping I mean they had people on the patio, people in the bar, and people in the cafe. I wasn't too thrilled when I tried to walk in the door and was told there was a cover charge...I'm sorry what? Apparently it was 'open mic night'. Ok fine, I can support local artists.
I wanted to like this place, growing up for a bit out of Cramerton having a place like this in the area is a huge culture shift from what I remember of Gastonia growing up. I approach the bar to order a coffee and get a snide remark from the bar keep "you know you have to order coffee down there right?". Not so offensive sounding reading it, but tone is everything. No I do not know it is my first time here, sorry?
I ordered a dirty chai for there and was pleasantly surprised that it was spicy and yet not too overly sweet. I found a seat and started grading some papers and whatnot. Unfortunately fifteen minutes into my work, open mic night started. I say unfortunately because this place
had the volume turned all the way up and the speakers were not well adjusted. The first act was great a little jazzy ragtime band, which unfortunately sounded not so great because of the speakers being turned up way too loud.
Every time they would hit a high note the speakers would crack. I was expecting open mic night in a coffee shop would be some acoustic guitar, maybe some spoken word, or some other chill performance. Instead I heard a techno alien spoken word gig with the speakers again way too loud and a garage band metal group. I made it through three acts before I had to leave because the noise was unbearable. Yes, I expect noise in a coffee shop, but I don't expect a splitting headache especially after I paid a cover to use your internet and drink your coffee. If they adjusted the speakers the noise would have been tolerable.
I might go back to check it out on a normal night without the unbearably loud music or during the day, but probably not because in addition to the loud music they limit internet access to one hour. I get you don't want people taking up space all day, but one hour seems pretty strict. Out of curiosity I asked if you could get additional time if you ordered another drink, but they informed me that it was linked to an ip address and each person could only log in once per day for free. Smh....$6 for a drink + cover and I only get an hour of internet?
