| - I highly recommend parking, walking around, and leaving, unless by some chance it's a quiet day.
We paid for a tour that "started in 20 minutes" according to the cashier. After 30 minutes in line in the hot and stuffy lobby, we were ushered into a theater to watch a dated movie about the dam. It was interesting enough, but the employee screaming at the group in front of us to back away from the door was a far better show.
After the movie, we were herded out of the theater and back in line. After 15 more minutes in that line, we asked an employee when the tour would actually start. She said it would start when we took the elevator down. Judging from the line and its pace, we had about another 15 minutes to go.
So, the tour that "started in 20 minutes" had become the tour that still hadn't started after nearly an hour. The employee, who was really nice and understanding, got the manager, who was a total jerk. When I said it was "ridiculous" that we had been in line 45 minutes for a tour that was supposed to start in 20 minutes, he told me that it wasn't ridiculous on their busiest day of the year. I guess I should have magically known this.
I asked him why the cashier told us it would start in 20 minutes. He said they were contract employees and he had no control over what they said. I'm not sure what he manages, but apparently it's not the staff. Long story short, he clearly didn't care that we had been misinformed, but he at least let us get a refund.
I have no idea what the tour is like. It's probably cool, informative, etc. But before you buy, ask how long it will be. If there's a line to get into the theater, expect about an hour's wait. And dress for summer-- the building is crowded and hot while you wait in line.
Some other tips:
1. Although the website says that children under 8 aren't allowed on the tour, they apparently are. There were MANY children in line. And strollers. (I'm sure those 3-year-olds really enjoyed touring a power plant.)
2. The dam itself is lovely, an amazing feat of engineering. Stay outside, enjoy the views and the fresh air, marvel at the scale of the dam and its art deco design features. Avoid the visitor's center.
