| - Midwood Smokehouse has excellent, 5 star fatty brisket and mostly good other items.
My family of 6 (5 adults + 1 kid) split a Pig Out combo platter, 2 tacos, and a few sides.
Pig Out Platter with...
- Brisket (fatty): Amazing! So flavorful, moist without being gross like I've had at other places. Probably the best I've had.
- St Louis Style Pork Ribs (dry): A lot of nice smoke flavor in the ribs. I liked them even better when I added sauce which is an option but my dad prefers dry.
- Carolina Chopped Pork: The weakest item in the platter. Texture was good, but the taste wasn't there.
- Hickory Smoked Sausage: Good, nice flavor and texture. The brisket and ribs were good enough that I wish we had just gotten 2x brisket and 2x ribs though!
Stockyard Tacos - Why order tacos at a BBQ place? I think the answer is, "Don't let kids order anything." Somehow the addition of all the taco toppings made the brisket less interesting, not more.
Sides
- Hush Puppies: I really liked these hush puppies. Nice crunch on the outside, soft inside, and buttery corn flavor. The only downer was how few we got. The platter came with hush puppies, and we also ordered a side of them, but we still only got about 9.
- Mac & Cheese: Not great. Dry without any strong cheese taste.
- BBQ Baked Beans: Really good! Hearty and meaty.
- Creamed Corn: I've never had this before so I can't really compare it to any other versions, but I liked it. Very rich.
- Collard Greens: They were collards... not much else to say. As good as others I've had.
- Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos: They tasted mostly of bacon. No taste of the peppers themselves or the cheese that was inside.
- Sweet potato fries: A very generous amount of fries. I love sweet potato fries and this was no exception.
The only other weak point to mention is that for a BBQ place, they're surprisingly stingy with the sauce. My whole family had to split 4 small containers of sauce (like takeout ketchup sized). It was busy so it was hard to get more. Even after asking mid-meal, we didn't get any more until our server came by to pack up our leftovers. I've mostly been to places where the containers are just on the table. If you like sauces, ask for more at the start.
Overall: delicious brisket, generous portions, and friendly service with a few minor issues. I'll definitely be back again the next time I'm in Charlotte.
