  • I found out about this hair salon through Facebook and decided to give it a try, as I was due for a hair cut. I haven't yet found my go-to salon but this one is not too far from me, so booked an appointment online. I found the online booking system to be very convenient. It allowed me to pick a hair stylist and a date and time. Not having any prior relationship with any of the stylists, I booked with Tomomi Kan. The salon is quite nice - very spacious, with high ceilings and an industrial feel. Very trendy. When I arrived, I was asked to take a brief seat in the waiting area. The waiting area consists of a table with 4 chairs (sort of like a plastic desk that you would use to study in a dorm room) and some Asian magazines. It was a bit difficult to maneuver in that area, but that's okay, because shortly after, Tomomi greeted me and led me to her station. The hair styling chairs are extremely comfortable - they are cube-shaped and have arm rests. The downside is that the hair collects in the chair. Not a big deal though. Tomomi washed my hair and gave me a short, relaxing scalp massage. The shampoo smelled delicious, like fresh kiwis. The sinks were also very comfortable, and did not hurt my neck at all. The haircut was pretty basic - I asked for a 2 inch cut with some long layers, no deviations for my usual hair style. The cut took about 40 minutes, which I felt was reasonable - not too long and not too short. Tomomi was very quiet, which I appreciated (I'm not used to being super chatty with my hair stylists). Partway through the cut, the reception lady offered me a beverage (tea or water) but I declined because I was concerned that hair bits would fall into my cup. It was nice of her to offer though! There was not much styling of my hair at the end of the appointment. It was simply blow dried. I've been to other places that offer flat-iron, curling iron, hair product, etc. to enhance the look. That's fine, because I don't use hot tools in my hair regularly, but it's something that shows good service. Tomomi used a bit of a hair oil in my hair (it was one that the salon was promoting). It was okay, I don't think it really did anything. I had checked in on Yelp prior to the appointment, which gave me a 10% off coupon. Online, it said that Tomomi's rates started at $45. After tax, tip, and the 10% off coupon, my total was almost $80. I felt like it was a lot for a hair cut where I didn't ask for anything special, really. When I left the salon, I felt that my haircut was just "okay". I wasn't blown away. It felt like it was maybe 1 notch better than what I could get at Maya or Sora in Koreatown for $30. I got a few comments from friends that my hair seemed a bit crooked (which I had noticed too, after leaving). I ended up adjusting it myself, and 4 weeks later, it has grown out a bit but it's not great or anything. (Sometimes haircuts seem to get better after the hair has grown a bit). I think, overall, I was a bit underwhelmed. The service was nice, and the salon itself is lovely, but I expected more, given the money I paid. I've had inexpensive ($30) and expensive ($120) hair cuts in the past, but I did not feel that this was worth it.
