| - Lots of talk about this place. My brother and his wife have attempted it a few times but the line was always too long. Another friend said it's one of his favorite places but you have to go early or on a week night.
After browsing the strip for an hour or two, we made our way here around 330 on a Saturday. The line had about 15 people waiting outside so we went for it. I mean, a line means one of two things: slow, poor service and being unable to serve your diners in a reasonable manner, or the food is THAT good that it's worth the wait and that's why so many people are willing to wait. Judging by the reviews, I was assuming the second.
It took us about 45 minutes to get to the ordering part finally. I got what my friend recommended, carne sandwich with sirloin. I split it with my husband and my friend got the pollo sandwich for herself. After ordering, we got sat right away. Our food came out in under 15 minutes. There were 2-3 empty tables in the dining area we were in during the entire time we were seated and eating, so this is where I begin to beg the question--why the wait? It took 2-3 minutes to order and we literally got seated right after. As did the group in front of us and the group after us. Food comes out quick. You eat quick and go. It's in between fast food style dining and normal dining so again, why is there this extreme wait? Yeah, the place is small. But it's a quick turnover. You get up and can refill your own water and grab your own sauces, extra plates, napkins etc so service time isn't the answer either. It just baffled us.
Back to the food, it was pretty good. The steak was seasoned well and cooked to medium rare like we asked. I will say, I understood upon first bite why they have the deconstructed sandwich option. My friend's chicken sandwich was no hassle, but every bite I took into mine pulled the entire slab of steak right off the sandwich. And the onions and peppers. So I basically ate mine deconstructed style, though it was unintentional. I'd recommend ordering any carne sandwich that way for future reference.
I'd say the sauces were the game changer and kept this from being an overall 2 experience. Pretty unique and all clearly freshly made. There was a sweet onion one, a roasted red pepper one, a garlic butter one (think Papa John's garlic butter dip on crack), and one just called "yummy" which cracked us up, but was indeed yummy. Reminded me of an Italian dressing, as it was thinner than the others. Having those flavor options to dip and spread made a difference.
I wanted to be wowed by this place and have it be a definite 5-stars. While we all agreed it was good, that's it. Just good. Not good and worth the long wait. Not good and unique atmosphere or something quirky to set the place apart because it's much like any hipster, exposed-beam-decor place popping up in any city. Not good and I'm already planning my next visit. Just good with some pretty cool sauces. Lots of people were getting takeout orders while we waited in the long line, perhaps that's the secret?
