  • In my brief time on this Earth, I've gotten three of these massages: 1) Shanghai, 2005, where Phil was found wandering down a dark alley with his family, only to end up at a parlor populated by teenage girls whose biographies involved being sent away at a young age to reach for bigger and better things by attending massage school and attempting to make a better life for themselves. My girl told me that she hadn't seen her family in years. So sad. But she liked my feet. So it wasn't a complete loss. 2) Monterey Park, 2008, where I was beaten to a pulp -- begging for mercy spawned maniacal bouts of laughter. I later learned that their impeccable business model consisted of pain = gain. 3) Vegas, 2015, with the gf, after we'd dined across the street at Jjanga. It was quiet and clean. We opted for the $20/hr option. The rough breakdown was 20 minutes on upper body anterior, 20 minutes on upper body posterior, and 20 minutes on lower body + feet. Apparently, I was given the deluxe package (+$10) when I nodded in response to some unintelligible English that had been muttered to me prior to the start of the session. As far as I could tell, the only addition was the hot rocks -- the first of which scalded my back. Besides the burn, it felt surprisingly pleasant. The lady who worked on me did a good job. She applied the perfect amount of pressure without any input from me and maintained symmetry on both sides of my body. Important because anybody who's ever gotten a massage knows that, to maximize satisfaction, equal forces must be applied to both sides of the body AND at the same spots... OR ELSE! No?? Minus two stars because of the discrete machinations that were plotted in our presence to extract more money from us. Which they stopped as soon as they realized that I understood their Mandarin. In the end, they attempted to overcharge us anyway. Girlfriend wouldn't stand for it and a shouting match nearly ensued. Between us, we left a combined $10 tip. I patted myself on the back for being so generous. Then I learned that most people tip much more than that. On one hand, they had it coming. On the other, we can never show our faces there again. Fortunately, there are 5,283 similar such business within a 0.1 mile radius.
