  • I decided to get a basic manicure at lunch. I looked over my options and decided to go with a Yonge Street option over fancier Yorkville places. I am not bothered by people or not speaking English or a lot of typical complaints about less expensive nail spots, and I like supporting small, immigrant-owned businesses when I can. Man, I wanted to love this place. I had high hopes. But a series of things happened that mean I can't go back. 1) While I was looking at nail polishes, I noticed they looked like they had all been sitting a while, so I was picking up and rolling the ones I was interested in to see what they looked like without separating, and one of the OPI polish names on the bottom seemed... like a bad match? So I googled it, and sure enough it's a hot pink when I was looking at pale pink. They filled the bottle with some other polish. 2) The nail file and buffer were clearly well used. Lots of bits of other people's nail them. Very well used. Yikes. 3) I settled on a pale pink Essie polish that was clearly newer. When it came time to paint my nails, the woman doing my nails pulled out another bottle of polish from behind her and said it was slightly pinker and maybe I'd prefer it? I hesitated, remembering the swapped bottles and seeing it said something about "big 5 free" which was on the poster for the bio-gel they use, and I wasn't getting a gel manicure. But it did seem like a nicer colour, and I said yes. The next day I washed my hair. When I was dressed so saw that the edges had started to peel. Her technique was great, so it wasn't shoddy application. The woman doing my nails was really great about checking in about my nail shape and length, my comfort as she did my cuticles, and as she massaged my hands (after the polish, which was something new to me but meant it wasn't rushed and I wasn't left doing nothing while my polish finished drying after an initial stint under a fan). Really too bad the place seems to be putting cost-cutting over quality.
