  • Back in the late 70's when the feds bought up this land they wanted as much popular support as they could muster, and most people where happy to support this park. Thanks to then Congressman Sieberling, it is a beautiful area that remains undeveloped and available to all. My issues with them are just a handful. First, they slowly pushed out and nearly made irrelevant their park store and volunteer programs. Kendall lake and shelter have fallen into disarray, used to have snow shoeing, and activities there. Happy Days visitor center had wonderful music programs and lyceum programs that are probably long gone. The park no longer advertises in the friday paper and no more hard copies of upcoming activities. The happy days and other locals are used for "private events" and even the writers and poetry workshops were moved out of the hines road hill buildings and those were replaced with some kind of la-dee-da corporatist click that has removed the picnic tables, grills and other trappings of "populist" and replaced these with the words "private" as in elitist events. It is a travesty what has been happening to this park since about the last 5-7 years or around the time that they officially became "national park". Where the heck was the Jaite Paper Mill rolling mills dismantled and sent to, why aren't there some museums and expansion on the history of the area, in particular the mills and mill workers, the agriculture and farms, the native american burial sights, etc....what are these govt historians and park supers doing anyway, a whole lot of nothing? Why not remodel camp mueller or some of the artists colonies that were thriving in the area, or why not some haloween-seasonal events. Years ago we had the National Folk Festival come out with cowboy poets and native dancers, it was quite the show...now the field where that took place (near Everett) is loaded with huge mountains of gravel for the past 10 years. I am also disappointed with the fact that there is little actual desire for civic engagement with the population, by the park officials and the speed limits need to be dropped to 25 or 30. There is a little more to the park than just the biking craze, not all of us are bikers and i don't feel the park is holding up its end. Last I saw, the little park visitor store which started out at happy days, was on a peninsulas main street hidden away from most people, and now i think its gone all together.......how about fixing up the old barn for the peninsula players-actors....something?
