  • Au pied de cochon (PDC) (At the pig's foot) is Montreal's answer to the ever popular Black Hoof back home in Toronto (http://www.yelp.ca/biz/black-hoof-toronto#hrid:hfX3k4OIQZ9IQgCYto5fSg). If it were strickly for the food, this place would get a 5 star bar none. However, being in Montreal, the service left a lot to be desired. This fantastical place is a meat lover's delight. PDC creates superb dishes out of the entire animal. There is so much deliciousness on the menu it takes multiple visits to truly sample everything. I was here recently while visiting friends in Montreal. We arrived and were seated at the back of the very cramped restaurant (even on a Tuesday night!) You definitely need to make a reservation on any evening. Our waiter came by and described the menu and made a point of assuring us that everything was on the menu tonight. I thought it was a little odd since you'd expect them to HAVE everything if it's on the menu... anyways. We also ordered a few drinks and a bottle of wine, which in infamous Montreal style took a couple of reminders for them to bring it over. So I really wanted to try the Oreilles de crisse, to see PDC's take on a bit of deliciousness often enjoyed in my childhood. Unfortunately, unlike promised, it was NOT available that night. Apparently neither was the wine we wanted. Why our waiter made a point of telling us everything was on the menu when SEVERAL things we asked for were clearly not, is beyond me. So instead, I tried the Cromesquis de foie gras (little cubes of deep fried fois gras) and the Saucissettes fumées marinées for appetizers. The cromesquis were absolutely fantastic. At $3.50 for two, these little delights are worth it. The smoked saussage was pretty meh. Like a more flavourful, less salty Slim Jim. For the main course, I tried the much Yelped about fois gras poutine. Say what you will about fois gras but daaaamn that was the best poutine this Quebecois has evar tasted! Overall, PDC is a great restaurant and I've been assured that the service is usually better. I will just have to go back and see for myself. Although at $100 a head with drinks for dinner, it won't be anytime soon!
