| - I had an 8 month lease at Chazal and was finally happy for the first time with the apartment complex I was living at. Happy enough to sign a lease for another full year. However, towards the end of the lease, some maintenance issues started to arise. The AC started leaking, my toilet kept running after flushing, and the sink was starting to leak and spray when you turned it on. Angela and the rest of the staff did their job of sending maintenance to our unit to get it fixed. However, those problems persisted for the last few weeks of the lease. I actually had a buddy who is a handyman and had him look at my toilet and the maintenance guy put the toilet handle on the wrong way, which was causing the handle to not fully reset to the position. Luckily, my friend, did this free of charge so I didn't have to deal with maintenance again. Still at this point I was pretty satisfied with Chazal as Angela in the office was a sweetheart always having my packages ready for me, when needed. The other woman I dealt with, I believe her name was Jill, was equally as friendly and helpful. Where my review goes South is when I had to move back spur of the moment with my family in NY due to a medical emergency. I contacted the leasing office letting them know of my circumstance. Unfortunately, I had to leave the unit with a bit of a mess. I didn't get to clean all the rooms and or appliances. I was expecting to get billed for this when I moved out. When I received my bill, I was billed for keys not being returned, trash removal, full clean, pet seal on carpet, and FULL PAINT. I honestly agree with all the charges except the full paint which was $350.00. I got a voicemail from Greystar (the management company of Chazal) shortly after I received the bill. I decided to call Greystar back to ask why I was charged for a FULL PAINT when I know exactly how I left the unit when I moved out. I spoke with Jim Cook and told him about the charges and I agreed to pay for everything besides the paint charges, so we settled up on that. Jim said he would send an email to them to see why I was charged for the paint. He said to expect a response back that day. Fast forward a few days, and I still have not heard back from Jim. I decide to take it into my own hands to call Jim back to we could put this to rest. He sends them another email and calls me back saying that the complex told him the unit was left a complete mess, with damage to the walls, broken glass outside, and smoke damage. He said they took pictures to document all the damage. Once again, I told him I understand that I was charged for the mess that was left when I had to leave on emergency, but didn't understand the reason for new paint. He said it was due to "smoke damage." I don't smoke and I have a dog, so I made my roommate smoke outside at all times. So I asked to see the pictures with the damage to the walls. Jim then started to get frustrated with me and claims I must be trying to pull his leg, telling me that you can't see smoke damage so there's no pictures to show me. At, this point I got annoyed as I was the one who called HIM back in the first place. Why would I be wasting my time to "pull your leg?" I was just trying to put this bill to rest. Jim ended the phone call by saying you don't have to do anything, Jim Cook will take care of this. I'm not exactly sure how to interpret what that means. I hope I don't see a surprise claim on my credit report for this nonsense.
To make a long story short. The complex is a nice place with great staff in the office. But I feel like I'm being scammed by whoever is evaluating the units when you move out. So in that case I would not suggest renting from Chazal, at least while Greystar is managing it. Unless, you want to be left with a moving out bill with a surprise charge, and be rudely spoken to while you're trying to take care of it. While most of this review is against Greystar, they're still a huge part of the apartment complex.
I will be leaving this review on Greystar's yelp page as well. However, I felt it was necessary to post here as I feel like most tenants don't look at the management companies yelp page before making a decision to rent. I didn't even know they had a yelp page, until I started writing this review.
