  • For my 500th review, I choose to write about one of the great loves of my life, Toronto. An opportunity to leave fair Toronto recently presented itself, and though it was tempting and plans were set into motion, we had to hit pause. Toronto won. It didn't just win me, it won someone I care about *the most*. She's just got a way, you know? Canada itself is guilty of sometimes having a strange inferiority complex, and gets a bit weird about its biggest city. "It's like little New York", "It's just like Chicago"... well I say Stop This Nonsense. Toronto is at its best when it isn't trying to be something it's not. It is an excellent world class city, with thriving ethnic neighbourhoods, magnificent market culture (Hayy Kensington and St Lawrence), the best film festivals and bars in every crevice. Let's just top this off with an island where you can swim and take in some of the best skyline views in North America, and call Toronto what she is: A five star dame. We've made the news because of our crack-smoking mayor, and that's funny (no press is bad press), but also heartbreaking. We should be making the news because we're an excellent place to visit, brimming with parks, art galleries, theatres and bars. I know I mentioned bars twice, but there are that many and they're that good. Finally I say: Go ahead. Make fun of Canada's biggest city. Does it hurt my feelings? Yes. And what will I do about this? I'm going to go to the hospital, and have my feelings checked... for free.
