| - As a recent graduate of Illinois, The Bread Company was my first choice for any date. I remember as a freshman going past the restaurant and seeing the various wine bottles line the windows and thinking it was the coolest cafe. I thought I'd go in and just enjoy wine and cheese, but was pleasantly surprised! My go-to items are: 1/2 pitcher of the sangria (personally prefer the white but the red is great too), fried goat cheese croquettes, baked goat cheese, tomato-basil fondue, and the raclette.
Sangria: Lots of fresh fruit within the sangria and while I preferred the lighter and more fruity white, my girlfriend loved the rich tasting red. Either is a great option to pair with the raclette. Supposedly drinking wine with the raclette makes it easier on the stomach, and hey I'm not complaining!
Goat Cheese Croqutte: Personal favorite of the gf, the sweetness of the goat cheese pairs very well with the strawberries. Any fan of goat cheese would love this dish
Baked Goat Cheese: I loved this dish and I'm not even a fan of goat cheese. The sauce is really good, little too much basil, but paired with the cheese its excellent.
Tomato-Basil Fondue: 2nd best entree in my opinion, the cheese they use in the fondue is somewhat bitter and the addition of tomato and basil really does make a difference. Served with bread and a variety of peppers and other seasonal veggies. Very gooey and presented well.
Raclette: Easily both mine and the gfs favorite. We got this recommended to us by our server after we said the regular fondue was meh. Raclette is different then fondue in both the cheese used and the way its served. The cheese is a little less bitter and is served on a skillet after being sliced off the rind and baked. The result is a cheese that can still be served like fondue but is not viscous. Paired really well with seasoned potatoes, bread, and fresh bites of cornichon and onion.
Vibe and other things: Really hipster, none of the chairs are the same. If you look past that the wait staff is super nice and really just some nice college kids to talk to. Great spot for valentines day (pre-fix menu); they open up the back which has a nice "terrace" that's on a second level.
