| - WRONG! UNETHICAL! Bordering on Cruelty.
I'm sorry to say this, but this zoo is not a zoo, it's a circus theme park with exotic animals stuck inside of it.
An actual ZOO is based on conservation and the study of animals, not rollercoasters, log rides, and cotton candy carousels. There are zero notable conservation efforts coming out of this zoo, they build and build and build without asking "Should we?" and the cages and enclosures the animals have are BARBARIC.
The monkeys and gibbons are stuck in small little fenced cages and the worst part is, they are within HAND REACH OF HUMANS. Okay, that might sound fun and cute, but guess what? Monkeys should NOT be able to reach out and touch you, it's a safety hazard for the animal. It's bad enough that people with their screaming kids feed them popcorn and NO ZOOKEEPERS ARE THERE TO SAY NO....but what if one of the monkeys scratched a guest? No, really? What would happen if some idiot was teasing a monkey and it scratched or bit him? That monkey would have to be put down and the idiot who teased it would probably sue. All of that, because this zoo refuses to create safe enclosures for their living creatures.
The giraffe feeding is sweet, but the area they have is dismal and fenced in like a prison, it is NOT big enough for land mammals of that size.
The staff here is really not up to task from what I've seen. Not only are the zookeepers not keeping an eye on the most heavily visited areas (the monkeys, giraffes, etc) but they seem to not care what happens. People feeding monkeys their popcorn, people throwing things at prairie dogs, etc, it doesn't seem to get anyone bothered.
I had a fun moment with one of the zookeepers in the petting zoo. I went here because my little niece and nephew wanted to go, so we went...We got to the petting zoo area and we were feeding the goats and deers, pretty basic. In the middle of the petting zoo is an enclosure with a turkey in it, a large turkey. My nephew and I threw some seed at his feet, and a petting zoo-keeper comes up and says "HEY, Don't FEED THAT TURKEY, NO FEEDING THE TURKEY" Well then why is it IN THE MIDDLE OF A PETTING ZOO!??? Seriously pal? You have a turkey in a cage in the middle of a petting zoo and there are NO signs that say don't feed...and you're yelling at me and my nephew? What an idiot. This is what I'm talking about, it's just sloppy.
This place is ghetto, I'm sorry to say it, but it's ghetto. It's way on the west side, BFE west side with all the kinds of things you expect to see on the west side, the fences are old and janky, the cages are small and janky, and some of the people working here are not intelligent or capable. My biggest beef is that the animals are not truly safe...they are within throwing distance of food and junk and people can get WAY too close for that to be safe. Wild animals are wild for a reason, they need room and privacy to roam and be free, they can't be forced into a space right next to thousands of screaming kids and goofy people all day. How would you like it?
I won't support this place, they treat their animals like commodities and all they care about is building a circus, they are constructing a rollercoaster right now...they don't care about animal preservation or conservation, they care about making money and growing bigger, not doing what's right by living creatures.
Never again.
