  • OK, so my review is a bit late, but I'm out Yelp-ing rent-a-car places again, and I thought I'd contribute. I've read horror stories on here but I thought, with the great rates, that I'd take my chances. I rented in August 2015 for a one way trip from Phoenix to Vegas in a Mustang (or similar) convertible. I approached the counter prepared for all the problems I had read about. It was pretty unnerving when I saw a woman literally crying in her hands in the chairs next to the check-in counter. The representative was not nice/not mean, what I like to call "New Jersey nice"). She tried to hard sell me on insurance, but a little politeness and assertiveness helped her understand that I wasn't buying. A strange question she asked me was, "Ok...do you have your car insurance?" (Something nobody in their right mind would carry on vacation). She told me that, because I didn't buy their insurance, I'd be subject to a $200 ticket by the police if I got pulled over and would be fully responsible for any damages or accident. I figured I'd take my chances rather than pay the insurance fee that was equal to the amount of my rental fee. She also tried to sell me an upgrade to a premium car for 50% off the difference. I didn't bite. When I went down to pick up my car, I got the upgrade for free, a Camero convertible (I guess they were trying to get it back to Vegas). I made sure to take a couple pictures and videos of the car before I left the lot as there is no supervised inspection. The car was pretty sweet, a few cigarette burns, but drove fine. I made sure to fill up the tank right before dropping it off in Vegas. No complaints there; just pulled up, a very friendly guy gave it a quick once over and handed me a receipt. My credit card wasn't charged until a week or 2 later, the exact amount I was quoted. All in all a good renting experience. Just a little stressful knowing my car was uninsured and the uncertainty of how things would play out based on reviews. Advice: Go somewhere else if it's affordable, but don't pay hundreds of dollars more to avoid this place. Be POLITE and ASSERTIVE with the staff. The staff was not mean or unprofessional. Thrifty does, however, have sort of a manipulative insurance policy that blindsides you when you're getting the keys; be prepared for that. If you're not OK with paying the insurance fee, which would have nearly doubled my bill; or you're not OK with the risk of driving uninsured for your rental period, go elsewhere. Otherwise, the money saved is worth the few inconveniences.
