  • Prologue: My fiancee and I were discussing where to go for our weekly Saturday evening dinner date and she said she was in the mood for some protein. I looked through some places in our area, which I had recently bookmarked based on reviews from my fellow Elites. I recommended this restaurant and it turned out to be just what she had in mind. The Plot: We started by sharing the Blinkin Heng salad, which was followed by a Shepherd's Pie Signature Pasty and a Lovely Bit a Salmon Premium Pasty, and finished with a Sticky Toffee Pudding. This was the first time for both of us to try this type of cuisine and it was a welcome learning experience. The Scene: The Blinkin Heng included a pleasing assortment of roasted turkey, greens, fruit, nuts, cheese, bacon (which we requested to have on the side), and hard boiled egg with just the right amount of white balsamic dressing. They kindly split the order into two portions, which was plenty for each of us, and we also appreciated the care that went into to the presentation. Judging by how flaky and perfect the pasty crusts were, my impression is that they were freshly baked just prior to serving. The contents were also nice and warm when they arrived at our table. My conclusion was that one advantage of preparing pies in a manner similar to a turnover, rather than using a pie tin, meant they could be baked more quickly like a calzone. The Shepherd's Pie pasty was made with ground lamb along with mashed potato and the usual pot pie veggies and was served with a side of red wine gravy. There was just the right amount of mashed potato surrounding the other ingredients, the lamb was seasoned perfectly for me, and the veggies were firm yet tender. This pasty reminded me of Scaciatta, which is an Italian meat pie that is sometimes made with lamb and something I enjoyed many times when growing up in New England. Consequently, this turned out to be a genuine comfort food experience for me. The Lovely Bit a Salmon pasty was stuffed with plenty of marinated salmon, a white wine and cream dill sauce, sautéed asparagus, garlic roasted tomato, spinach, and red potato. This pasty reminded me of the type of traditional salmon pie you might find in a northern European country such as Lithuania and it was comparable in quality to the Shepherd's Pie pasty in every regard. My fiancee was completely satisfied with this dish, as any fellow salmon lover most certainly would be. My fiancee and I place a great deal of importance on the experience of finishing a meal with a delicious, satisfying, and memorable dessert. The Sticky Toffee Pudding we ordered definitely fit the bill. There was plenty of of cake to share, it was warm and moist when it arrived on our table, and the texture and consistency was was like a cross between a brownie and molten chocolate cake, which paired very well with the vanilla ice cream, of course. The Rest of the Story: The decor was exactly what you would expect at a restaurant with the word Cornish in its name. My fiancee especially liked the wine bottle candle holders on each table. We were seated right away on a Saturday evening and the staff were courteous and friendly. Epilogue: The overall quality of the food easily deserves 3 stars. At first we were a bit hesitant to award a 4th star due to the tab for dinner being a little pricey. However, considering the fact that everything was very good along with the relative uniqueness of this type of cuisine we decided that it was worth it. Photo Design: by Billie Z.
