We went here for a few years and they were fine for routine dental cleanings for my kids. The issue arose when my son had a cavity.
My son is 3 and was extremely cooperative at the dentist. They explained to my husband and I that it's their policy to separate children from their parents when they're getting a cavity filled and that general anesthesia would be necessary because of his age, no matter how cooperative he was- that was the policy. This struck as as very odd, because my son had previously had a surgery with a different pediatric specialist and they made a point of telling us that they wanted the parents there with the child because they wanted the child to feel safe & stay calm in a new situation. Seemed logical to me. So, rather than making the appointment for the procedure as we checked out I said to them that I would, "call back to schedule it." The medical assistant immediate snapped back that it was a "very bad cavity" and that we needed to have it taken care of as soon as possible, with a tone that implied we were being negligent.
I went home and immediately called another nearby pediatric dentistry chain and asked if they routinely separated kids from parents when cavities were filled. They said they did not. I scheduled an appointment. The new dentist had my son sit on my lap while she quickly took care of what she called a "very, very tiny" cavity with only a little bit of laughing gas. It literally took her less than 3 minutes. They never even suggested putting him to sleep, using papoose boards to routinely restrain him & or separating him from his parents.
I'd prefer my kids remain unafraid of the dentist and that a dentist be willing to listen to parent concerns, so Im so happy we left Kids-r-cool to get a second opinion.
I would never recommend Kidz-r-Kool to anyone after this experience and seeing how dramatically better other dentists can be. Please call around and research you pediatric dentists policies.
