  • The trouble began when I learned that my regular gyno was no longer with TWHS when I called to schedule my annual appointment. It would have been nice to receive a phone call, post card, or some communication ahead of time to tell me I would have to switch gynos so I could take some time to research others in the office. I don't know about other women, but I'm one that likes to thoroughly research a doctor, their credentials, and their background, especially when said doctor makes me get buck naked with my legs spread open in stirrups. Put on the spot on the phone, I chose Dr. Watters as my new gyno. In January, I went in for my annual appointment. I asked for a couple of blood tests, a request that was accommodated. Unbeknownst to me, Dr. Watters also ordered a bunch of other routine blood work, such as sugar, vitamin D, etc. If he or a member of his staff would only have asked me, I could have told them that my PCP had just done these tests recently. Since they didn't ask, and the tests were done without my consent/knowledge, I was stuck with a very high lab bill. When I contacted billing about this, they told me I should have told them those tests had already been done by my PCP and that I'd have to pay the bill. Apparently they expect their patients to have ESP! Oh, and they also charge $25 for the privilege of having blood drawn in their office, a fee I could have avoided by going to Sonora Quest right down the street. My annual turned up a possible health issue, which led to a couple of follow-up appointments. I received the very first bill for the first appointment, and it said "past due" on it. How can a bill be past due when it's the first bill I've received?! The exact same thing happened for the second appointment. To boot, I had never received any EOBs from my insurance company, so I had no proof that TWHS had billed them at all, let alone correctly. I called billing, got voice mail, and left a detailed message. They never called me back, and I resolved not to pay the bill until they did. Just over a week later, billing called me demanding payment (mind you, this is a mere 10 days after I received the bill, which isn't even much time to pay it even if I didn't have any problems with it). I asked them why they never returned my call, and they had no answer. I asked them how a first bill could be marked "past due", and again, no answer. The only thing they answered was why I hadn't received any EOBs, and their response to that was the brilliant, "Call your insurance company." I told the billing person TWHS was fired and hung up on her since she had no answers about anything. So, call the insurance company I did. They said they paid their portion of my second visit in June (why I never received an EOB is due either to their incompetence or that of the USPS, but that's another story). I received the bill from TWHS in August. They dilly dallied around on sending me a bill for about 2 months, then called me 10 days after I received the bill to demand payment. If they have no sense of urgency to ask for their money, then why should I have any to give it to them? On top of that, no one in their office had ever told me when I should come back to the office for a follow-up appointment. Apparently the fact that I might have cancer is no big deal in their eyes. I'll be heading to another gyno to get better care.
