| - Be careful! The customer service reps are no more than sleazy sales people using anything they can to trick, lie, deceive, and scare you into paying more money. And from the reviews I have read, they make it a common practice to take advantage of exhausted travelers, myself included.
David was very unpleasant to deal with and did not seem to be interested in helping me upon my arrival to a city I have never been to before. His tone and attitude were a big part of the problem.
When I arrived and gave him my reservation information, he let me know in a disappointing tone that I was getting a VW Jetta. I told him that was fine and he said, "Are you sure? Because I can get you something else." Really, I was fine with the Jetta and wasn't interested in paying for an upgrade. So, again, I told him I was fine with the Jetta.
Then he said, "Okay, sign here." The charges were much higher than I anticipated and I let him know that. He acted as if there wasn't a problem and that's just the price of the rental. He didn't offer any explanation of the charges. I let him know that my office manager reserved the car and I was not told of any extra charges. He had nothing to say. I told him to forget it and cancel the reservation. I would make other arrangements. He said, "Are you sure? You really want me to cancel it?" I told him yes, cancel it because I'm not paying a higher rate.
He finally explained that the huge increase in price was insurance for 4 days - Loss Damage Waiver, Personal Accident Insurance, Personal Effects Protection, and Additional Liability Insurance. These are all optional products. I know that my office manager declines optional insurance when reserving rental cars, and my reservation was no different. She declined the insurance options and David added them back into the cost. I told him again that I was not going to pay it and he finally removed the insurance fees. He then went on to let me know twice that if I were in an accident I would be responsible for at least $3000 in damages. I was furious that he was using scare tactics and a hard sell to get more out of me.
He handed me a copy of the rental agreement. And silence. No keys. I had to come out and ask him where the keys were. He responded "In the car." That's it. No help, no thank you. I couldn't wait to leave.
The VW Jetta was a great car - very clean. However, the air conditioning settings had limited options. We had to choose between air blowing at face level or at foot level - not both at the same time. Even with it on high, it was not comfortable in the car while it was 113 degrees outside. Unfortunately, that was the temperature 3 out of the 4 days we were there.
On the plus side, returning the car was incredibly fast and easy with no hassle. Plenty of signs to get you in the right direction and helpful staff ready to take over the car and get you on your way.
Give yourself plenty of time because the shuttle ride takes a while. I was surprised that the rental car center was so distanced from the airport. The shuttle drivers are courteous, but fast to take your suitcases. Too fast, actually. The drivers fish hard for tips.
If you are just planning a vacation on The Strip, do yourself a huge favor and skip the rental car. The taxes are incredibly high. Next time I plan on taking a cab to and from the airport and using the monorail on The Strip. The whole rental car experience sucked a lot of fun out of my trip.
