| - I've had three experiences at Russ Darrow. Two from years ago when I helped my mother-in-law buy a car in the cash-for-clunkers days. That experience went fine as there wasn't much haggling to do - the car was decently priced, so it was a bit ceremonious. A few years later they mailed her with a "your car is worth more than you owe - come trade it in!" letter. She was excited, as her Kia Rio was feeling small and she was ready to "upgrade". They had a gently used Toyota Camry on the lot she really liked. In short, we were able to buy that, but the haggling was painful. It took hours just to get to a reasonable price (that we put forth right away). They lowballed on the trade-in despite the mailing that said otherwise. After many trips to "check with my manager" and several hours, the deal was done. What really upset me was when we were close and the guy questioned her spending habits to justify her spending $20/mo more than we had budgeted. "How many times do you drive through McDonald's? That could be the difference." It was a bit insulting really. But, we held strong and got our deal.
My most recent experience was buying a used car for my son. We went in targeting a nice deal that was just listed on the internet. I had bumped into Cathy a week prior when I drove through to look at it, and we got her again when we came back to seriously pursue it. She was very nice during the whole process and I'd deal with her again. There wasn't much to haggle on - the car was priced at a good deal ($1000 more on the lot than on the internet listing). Knowing it would sell fast, I wasn't going to argue. As with all car purchases, it took hours. None of it was haggling however. Paperwork and prep, I guess.
The finance guy was a hoot - we had some laughs as we bumbled through all the paperwork.
The waiting area was clean and nice, though for as long as you might be there, some more comfortable seating might be nice. While they offer popcorn for a snack, other dealerships have fresh cookies. Anything is nice, really. I think offering some sodas might be a bonus - we spent a chunk of change, and a late afternoon coffee isn't my thing.
I'd buy a car here again if I find the right vehicle. My advice is to hold strong - know your budget and don't let a salesperson bully you around. Have your price in mind and be prepared to walk away if you need to.
