| - Restaurants are relatively simple for me: they have to have good, fresh food, consistently well prepared, with competent, friendly service. Interesting food is a plus. Arrogance isn't. I love this restaurant because it unpretentiously fulfills my expectations. Gould's has high quality meat and fish; they buy locally; the room is comfortable and comforting. Gould's is a steak house that rivals those in Chicago (and, I think, beats out any I've tried in New York City.) Because it's in C-U, it's cheaper than Chicago and New York. Yet you still get good service that is attentive without being overbearing, a solid (if not inspiring) wine list and food that is among the best in the city, consistently. Since it's a steak house, the meats had better be good, and Gould's meats are.
Gould's brunch is excellent, too. It, like the dinners I've had, is always reliably well done and high quality.
My only complaint is the creamed spinach. They have a strange recipe for it, that leans too heavily on the parmesan to fit in a steakhouse.
