  • Can I say they just aren't good at leave it at that? Oh, wait, that's a not helpful review is it. Okay, here are some details (and in case you don't want a spoiler before you get to the end of the review, I suggest you avoid reading that first line or looking at the number of stars). I have been to Colossal Cupcakes three times since they opened. Normally I wouldn't remember the exact number of times I've been to a cupcake shop -- or any shop, for that matter -- over the course of a couple of years, but the experiences were memorable enough to merit it. (Each time I went, I bought between 3 and 6 cupcakes to share at work, so I've had multiple flavors.) The first time I went, I was blown away. Each cupcake was moist, sweet, delicious, flavorful, etc., etc., etc. So I went back a second time and, again, I was blown away, but not for the same reason as the first trip. Each cupcake was stale, bland, processed-tasting (is that a word?), unpleasant, etc., etc., etc. It was bad enough that I didn't feel the need to go back. Until yesterday. What can I say? It's a super cute cupcake shop and I was really in the mood for a cupcake. Plus, I figured I shouldn't judge it entirely on the bad experience considering I'd also had a good experience. As they say, third try's the charm, but this trip certainly didn't charm me. Of the 3 flavors I tasted, one's only saving grace was that it so stale and flavorless that it almost distracted from the unnatural tasting frosting, one was bland enough to not be offensive (though the blandness in itself was fairly offensive) and one was passable but far from memorable. I am officially throwing in the towel for Colossal Cupcakes. I'd rather spend the money (and, um, calories) at Cookie and a Cupcake (Tremont), which is quite possibly my favorite place in the whole world (by "place" I mean "cupcake shop" and by "the whole world" I mean "Cleveland.") So, as I said: they just aren't good.
