  • I had a late lunch at Paulette's today. Not much into doughnuts or fried chicken but I work just a couple of blocks away and there has been a lot of chatter amongst the locals. I went with the small sample at $8, which includes 1 piece each of light and dark chicken, 4 dots and choice of dipping sauce or seasoning salt for the chicken. Attempting to balance the meal I included a side of coleslaw for $3. The chicken was uncommonly crunchy, not just crispy; I really like the resistance of breaking through the crust to the meat. The chicken itself is relatively moist with subtle flavour, probably from the reported brining they do. I had the honey mustard herb sauce which I found much too sweet and reminded me of sweet gherkins. The dots were chewy hunks of dough, sweetened; no redeeming qualities, really. Coleslaw? In a word, bland. Should have saved the $3 for ice cream at Ed's across the street. I would return for the chicken to take home and augment with my own sides. Fried dough? I'd head up to Athen's pastries on The Danforth for their loukoumades any day. Wishing them well but it's hard to image them as a neighborhood fixture a couple of years from now with their limited concept. Wow 9 months later. Finally came back and a new addition to the menu as of March 19; fried chicken sandwich. It's described as as "sweet, sour, salty & crunchy" in the form of fried chicken thigh w/ cucumber - dill aioli and sweet / sour tomato relish, served on a soft white roll. After a 5 minute wait, it's ready. Plain no frills hamburger bun is the first thing I see in the simple bag container. Lifting up the bun lid, I spy diced tomatoes over the aioli, over the minimal chicken pieces. First bite reveals the tell tale super crunchy chicken through the lifeless "soft white roll", with the overwhelming vinegar of the salsa. The aioli provides lubrication but little else. After more bites, the sandwich is disappointing, not enough chicken, which is also very dry, surprising, considering it's thigh meat. A pronounced flavour of sourness renders sandwich not recommended. If you're in the ' hood, go next door to Leslieville Pumps, where they also have a chicken thigh sandwich, which is superior. If on the west side, I had a fantastic fried chicken thigh sandwich at County General.
