On Thursday April 20, 2017 around 3:50pm had the absolute worst experience with Seven Hills Pet Hospital. I had just dropped my teenage son off at Liberty HS for a game when leaving the parking lot I noticed a group of HS kids and one mom standing around something on the ground clearly looking distressed. I rolled my window down and asked if anyone needed help. The mom in broken English let me know that there was an injured kitten that had been hit by a car. I immediately got out of my car and went to get closer look. The mom explained that she wasn't familiar with cats and didn't know how to even pick it up but that she was willing to take it to a vet. I scooped up the kitten and was cradling it while trying to explain how to get to the closest vet that I knew of - Seven Hills Pet Hospital. She was not understanding how to get there so I offered to take the poor kitten myself. The mom asked me to take her phone number and keep her informed and that maybe if it made it her husband would allow her to keep it. I gently placed the kitten on the front seat of my Tahoe wrapped in a blanket and raced to the vet. I half way parked my vehicle and ran in and quickly yelled out "please help - just found this kitten - it was hit by a car." One of the nurses came and took the kitten from me and rushed it to the back. A couple minutes later she came back out and asked if I was willing to be financially responsible for the kitten. I hesitated "no - I mean - not really - it's not my animal - I mean I don't want it to die - but I can't pay for it..." (I know that vet bills - especially emergency - can easily get into the thousands of dollars) She said "ok I will tell the doctor." A couple more minutes pass and she came back out. I could tell from her facial expression and body language that the poor kitten did not make it. She sat down and confirmed my assessment. My 10 yr old daughter and I felt badly - but were not distraught as we are not emotionally attached to the kitten as it wasn't ours. Anyways - the nurse asks me what I'd like to do with the kitten. "What?!?!? I don't know. It's not mine. What out my options?" She tells me that the doctor has decided that he would waive the $75 visit fee, waive the IV fee, waive the fee for the medicine they gave the cat to try to stabilize it .... and so on and so forth. But that they would have to charge me for the cremation. I said "thank you for waiving those fees. Just give me the kitten and I will either take it to the NSPCA or find some way to bury it. She then told me that if I did that then they would have to charge me for the visit, the IV and the medicine as the doctor "would have to get something for his time." At this point - I've been in the vet less than 15 minutes!!!! But clearly it's like a used car lot. It's not about a cremation fee or disposal fee ... but that the doctors "has to get something for his time!!!!" I absolutely refused to pay anything. I explained that I would wait if they would like to call the police but I was not paying anything. No good deed goes unpunished. I asked to speak with the doctor. He would NOT come out to talk to me. I took a business card and upon seeing 3 doctors listed asked which one was currently working. It was Dr. Bir S. Gill.
This is clearly a vet that is in it for the money NOT because they actually care about animals.
I asked "God forbid I was to see another injured animal - what SHOULD I do next time?" I was told "take it to the NSPCA." (Easily 40 minutes away from where I was at the time it was due to traffic) I explained "the kitten would not have made it. It barely made it here." She shrugged and had no response.
Sadly - the nurse that I was dealing with was as kind and gentle as could be. This is NOT her fault and NOT directed at her. It was the decision of Dr. Gill. The nurse said that she would pay the fee. I asked again to talk with Dr. Gill as it was not her responsibility to pay for this kitten either. She explained that a coworker or two were going to split it. Again - they should NOT have to do that.
