HAWAIIAN SPECIALS
Of course the reason you go to the Cal is for the Hawaiian specials and the Oxtail Soup is no exception. The Oxtail Soup is good. And if you're around Downtown, it's probably worth stopping in and trying.
-- Is it anything you can't get at home? Hell no.
-- Is it cheap? Hell yeah.
Note: Oxtail Soup is only available as a late night special so you'll have to wait until 11PM for it. The line gets a little long so be sure to bring something to do while you wait.
DON'T EXPECT MUCH (i.e. MY LAU LAU STORY)
In addition to the oxtail soup, once I decided to push it and get a lau lau. And naturally the taro & pork were dry & there was no butterfish, so being that I didn't have any poi, this didn't go down easy.
...Nowadays, I usually just get a side of portugeuse sausage & rice. Why? Just because. I think they serve Redondo's but I can't be sure. It's not sweet so it's not Purity.
CHEAP GRINDS
In any case, if you're used to the strip, this is going to be the cheapest meal of the week for you. 2 people can eat for $12 and change.
GOOD BLACKJACK
They also have $10 3-2 Double Deck Blackjack here with typical rules (Hit on S17, Double Down any 2 cards, split aces up to 4) which you'll want to stick around to play for a while.
CONCLUSION
It's a good place to visit if you're from the islands or your just happen to be downtown around 11PM. You can hit the tables and eat some local food at the same time. Not bad.
3-stars.
---------------
ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NOTE:
Admittedly, every time I go here, I'm checkin' out the crowd for local talent, but alas - no honeys ever show. I suspect they're all at the Asian clubs like Tao or PURE. Instead I see nothing but families with 4 kids & women in muumuu's that look like my Auntie. Oh well... at least there's good soup and good blackjack.
