| - The first time I had Craig's Cake Shop cake was at a friend's going-away party - at first I thought the hostess had made it because it had such a nice homemade look to it (in a good way, like you could tell it was not from just any old bakery, and it was decorated with great care). I was even more impressed by how it tasted. Their signature frosting stuck in my mind. It's their signature for a reason.
Fast forward to planning a wedding! I am a decent baker and make from-scratch cakes for friends' birthdays and stuff but no way was I going to pretend I could take on baking my own wedding cake. I still remembered how much I liked the cake from before. My (now) husband is a huge fan of cake, so I had no problem getting him to come here for a tasting (he scheduled it, in fact). We tried cake from several other places and Craig's just blew them out of the water in every imaginable way (price, taste, perceived quality of ingredients, everything). The not-too-sweet was an absolute must for me. I thought some of their fruit flavored cakes were quite sweet, but if you like that sort of thing and/or are looking for something unexpected it would be perfect. They have plenty of yummy offerings for people like me as well as people who like more sugar.
We chose lemon poppyseed cake (with lemon/lime mousse) and vanilla cake (with chocolate peanut butter mousse). We didn't have any fancy decorations, just their delicious not-too-sweet whipped frosting with white chocolate shavings everywhere. No topper (because I forgot to pack it, but it was very minimalist anyway). Our cake was not for looking at. Our cake was for eating. Despite having more cake than we needed for all the people who were there to have one piece, it went so quickly that I did not even get a piece of the vanilla cake with chocolate peanut butter filling. Should have gotten more of that. Guess we know what kind our anniversary cake is going to be! (Free with purchase of wedding cake!! That was not a sticking point when we were deciding, but it is a nice bonus and I am excited nonetheless. Also, seriously, who saves cake for a year? Ew. I don't know about you but I have never enjoyed cake that came from a freezer. Except ice cream cake.) We had a large hunk of the lemon poppyseed cake left over from the wedding...yum. Great recovery snack. Also, it still tastes heavenly good after a few days, which is more than I can say for almost all other cake I've eaten.
Customer service was also pleasant, at least to the extent I talked to them (my husband called them more than I did). Cake was where it needed to be when it needed to be there.
Absolutely no complaints, and they make the best cake I have ever had. You should give them a shot.
