  • For the longest time, I wasn't a huge fan of korean. I spent a term living right beside Koreatown and rarely ever visited the restaurants on the strip. However, since visiting the Owl of Minerva in Waterloo, I suddenly developed a love for kimchi tofu soup. Although my affection was invigorated at the Owl, this restaurant really served the best soup I've had (albeit I've only been to a handful of Korean places). I'm not certain what makes the soup here different, but I have a hunch that they start with excellent pork broth for their kimchi soup, whereas other places may not dedicate as much time to the broth, or they may even use water. Unlike the other restaurants I've been to, Buk chang also provides an egg to crack into the soup, and I fricking love runny eggs. On another note, I got the extra spicy here. I usually get the spiciest level of spice at Korean restaurants, as Korean food is on the milder side. Unfortunately, I wish I only got spicy. The soup was delicious, so delicious that I wish I wasn't only feeling the heat! My fault for overestimating my abilities, of course. I also enjoyed the banchan here, with my favourites being the daikon (of course), as well as their soybeans. They serve something like a dry natto - tons of umami flavour, but not slimy or.. funky-smelling. If anyone knows what this is called or where I can buy it, I'd love to know. All in all, great place to get a delicious, filling meal for $10.
