| - Wow! What a great Yelp event this was. Whenever I initially signed up for this event I can't say I really knew what to expect from it but it definitely exceeded any expectations. My wife and I arrived to the airport a few minutes later than expected due to I-376 construction. Thankfully getting our document to allow us through security was quick and we were quickly headed over to the alternate security checkpoint. While it was fairly painless, I wish my wife and I could have used our TSA pre check to make it quicker and easier.
Anyways once we made it airside, our experience began. It started out with us getting a passport to fill up and a ticket that was used for a raffle later in the day. Then we were off with our first stop being Steel Cactus which had Cactus style tacos. This wasn't just a bite but a full sized taco with some tortilla chips. It should have been my first clue that I was going to be stuffed by the end of the event but I naively trudged on. Our next two stops were the Marathon diner for Gyro and lemon chicken soup and Chais Pittsburgh Fusion for a California roll and spicy tuna roll. After that we made it through Penn Brewery (Obatzda balls), Quaker Steak & Lube (Louisiana lickers and tandoori mustard wings) and Local Craft (Mr Rodgers grilled cheese and tomato soup) before getting a little reprieve at Gaby Et Jules where I chose pistachio and earl grey macaroons. The next set was Vino Volo (truffle popcorn with Narcisi Wine), Bottega dei Sapori (Biscotti and Italian roast coffee) and Burghs Sports Bar for some boneless wings. Our last group was The club (Baguette with spring pea pesto, herb ricotta and pea shoots), Farm Fresh (California chicken panini with cream wild rice soup) and the Strip Market where we got Blume honey water. Having finished our passport we headed back to Martini where we were greeted with, you guessed it, more food. This time we all got a drink ticket good for a raspberry martini while they also had a caprese salad skewers, fried pierogies and loaded tator tots. Out of the bunch I think that the Mr Rodgers grilled cheese and tomato soup was my favorite as I loved the thick bread of the grilled cheese combined with the tart apple and savory Brie. A close second was the Obatza Ball which we heard may make an appearance on the menu if it tested well. I hope it makes it! I especially loved the crispy exterior with everything inside. Lastly my third favorite item was the loaded tater tots. First off, who can resist a potato product covered in bacon and cheese? As if that wasn't enough, they had a spicy seasoning on them which was perfect for me.
Once all of the Yelpers had made it back to Martini they gave away the grand prize of two tickets on WOW air! Sadly neither my wife nor I were the winners but it was cool to be in the drawing. We also got to hear about what the future of the airport would be.
The bottom line for me is that this was another great Yelp event! As a frequent visitor to the airport (~ 2 RT flights a month) I was excited to try places that I never had before and now likely will in the future like the Marathon Diner.
